Top Tips For Preparing For Your First Diving Trip

If you’ve recent booked your first Dive Victoria diving trip or experience, then it is likely that you will be feeling both nervous and excited in equal measures, and keen to know what will happen when you first arrive. It is also likely that you will want to prepare as much as possible for your first dive, in order to ensure that it is as successful as possible. With that in mind, here are a few top tips to help you to prepare for your first diving trip:

Ask Plenty of Questions

It is often said that knowledge is power, and for good reason: the more you know about a situation, the more comfortable you are likely to feel about it. That is why it’s so important to ask questions in the lead up to your first dive. Your Dive Victoria instructor will encourage you to ask plenty of questions so that you can be sure you are as prepared as possible before you, quite literally, take the plunge. This is particularly important if you are nervous about your first diving experience and feel you would benefit from some additional instruction and support. You should never feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about asking your diving instructor to explain something to you again (or even again after that!). All that matters is that you have asked enough questions, and received enough instruction, to feel fully confident about every aspect of the experience, in order to ensure that you enter the water feeling as comfortable and as knowledgeable as possible.

Ensure you're Insured

If you are planning to dive during your next Australian adventure then you should take the time to call your travel and health insurance provider before your trip: they will be able to tell you if your diving activities will be covered by your insurance policy, for your own peace of mind.  Many insurance companies do not offer diving or other extreme sports coverage as standard, however they will add it to your package for a small extra fee, so it is well worth calling them as soon as possible and ensuring that you are covered before you arrive at your vacation destination. If you have booked your diving trip at the last minute and are already in Australia then don’t panic: most insurers will add these kind of amendments to your policy very quickly, so you only need to pick up the phone and make the call today, and you’re likely to be ready to take to the seas tomorrow.

Book a Yoga Class

Never tried yoga or meditation before? It is well worth booking yourself in for a lesson or two in advance of your first diving experience. Whilst breathing is something that we all do every day, the way you breathe through your diving apparatus when you are underwater is quite different, and many people find that it’s an unusual and difficult technique to learn. However the technique needed for underwater breathing is remarkably similar to the techniques taught for yogic breathing, which is why a yoga lesson is likely to be so helpful in teaching you the constant, steady breathing technique that you need to be a successful diver.

Feel Safe

When you ultimately get into the water, it is important that you feel safe and confident every step of the way. We will never push you to do more than you feel able to do, and no one will be judging you based on how deep you dive, or how long you choose to stay underwater. All that is actually important is that you continue to feel safe throughout the whole process, and that you don’t panic: because of the calm breathing techniques required for successful diving, panicking under the water is actually one of the very worst things that you can do. Before you book your diving trip, why not visualise how you will feel when you are in the water (in order to go some way to preparing yourself)? You can also pre-plan some calming and reassuring thoughts that may help to calm you down and get you through, should you begin to panic when you first go under the water.
